How to clean, store, and maintain the Cooking Oil Tester (TPM)

How-To | Clean, store, and look after your Cooking Oil Tester (TPM) to keep it accurate and safe.

Before You Start

Looking after your Cooking Oil Tester (TPM) keeps its readings accurate and helps it last. As a rough guide: clean the probe after every use, wipe the body regularly, and check the calibration every 3 months.

Always let the probe cool before cleaning it — it gets hot in use and can burn you.

Steps

Clean the probe (after every use)

  1. Let the probe cool.

  2. Wipe off any oil with a soft cloth or paper towel.

  3. Use a mild detergent and rinse with clean water.

  4. Dry the probe with a soft cloth or paper towel.

If there's stubborn residue that's started to harden ("cold slag"), dip the probe back into the hot oil, then let it and the rod cool until there's no risk of burns. Repeat the cleaning steps above before the residue cools and hardens again.

Clean the body

  1. Turn the tester off.

  2. Do not use sharp objects, harsh abrasive detergents, or solvents on the casing.

  3. Use a mild detergent and rinse with clean water, or wipe the outer casing with a damp (not wet) cloth.

  4. Keep moisture away from the charging port, then dry it before storing or charging.

Store and transport it

  • Put the probe cover back on and store the tester clean and dry.

  • Keep it out of direct sunlight and away from water splashes and rain.

  • Avoid corrosive gases and salty air, and keep it away from strong electric fields and strong magnetic fields.

  • Handle it gently when moving it, and protect the probe from vibration, impact, or knocks.
